Project details

During COVID, many businesses transitioned to remote work. As the pandemic slows and the workforce is again reshaped, research shows that 59% of the workforce has opted to continue remote work status or adopt a hybrid model. With coffee shops and cafes becoming workspace outposts away from home, there is an opportunity to leverage a newly forged market with customized conveniences. Zombie Coffee is an example of in-house options catering to remote workers with table side, contact less delivery.

Project Approach

The first step was to define the approach and identify which new features might serve remote workers and benefit the existing user pool. Personas were created that identified the 2 most desirable target audiences; remote workers who work for more than 1 hour a day in cafes and large pre-orders from local in-office workers.

Personas

Persona 1

Renato is a remote worker who spends 3-4 hours a day sitting at a table in Zombie Coffeeโ€™s large indoor/outdoor space. He wants to find a comfortable seat with a plug for his laptop and does not want to spend time waiting in line for his order so he can be fully productive and not miss any part of the remote meetings he often has to attend spur of the moment.

Persona 2

Brooke is an Executive Assistant on a tight schedule who often pre-orders a large quantity of coffee and food for pick-up. She wants to pick-up the correct order as soon as itโ€™s been made and have it packed perfectly for a quick walk back to the office building.

Storyboards

It was determined that the critical MVP feature and most time consuming aspect of the project would be the interior mapping and location feature.

USER Flow

Two user flows were key at this stage; the menu > order > payment > location > order confirmation AND the trigger, alert and location picking/tracking for โ€œOrder Arrival.โ€ Especially if the user changed seats or forgot either a menu item or to add a specific detail about customization.

IN-House Customer LOCATION

A key strategy would be to provide a responsive map of the interior location of the coffee house, in this case the 2-rooms and parklet for Zombie coffee where the customerโ€™s phone would be reverse geo-tagged so that delivery, even if the customer changed seats in between order and delivery, would be seamless.

ORDER Customization

Customization in the app means getting your order delivered exactly how you like with no need for conversation. For a remote worker specifically, this means no break in concentration, meetings or flow. It also means that in addition to not standing in line, you can also remotely request a napkin or that an extra splash of milk be added to your coffee.
